Peel Ports, an operator of the Port of Liverpool is looking to expand its reach and infrastructure in Manchester by developing a new trimodal terminal in Salford, serving rail, sea freight and haulage logistics.

Improved Logistics

This port will provide a localised service for the region alongside the Port of Liverpool in order to convince and offer direct calls into the region from Europe and beyond.

The development will also reduce truck miles which are delivered for cargo delivered to Southampton, London Gateway and Felixstowe.

The project is set to establish the Nort-West as a hub of international trade and investment, as well as a contributor to the country’s dependence on the London area. It would also contribute to a reduction of environmental impact by the usage of the Manchester Ship canal instead of the road freight.

Salford Quays

Development

The port will come with the supplying infrastructure including the rail link container terminal and 1.5million square feet of logistics floor space,

It will also support up to 16 trains a day and will have great access to the port of Liverpool itself and the West Coast Main Line. The Port will also be able to handle long freight trains up 775m, the largest on the UK network.

The development also includes a significant investment in the improvement of the road network, some of which have been completed. That includes improvement works to junctions 10 & 11 on the M60, dual carriageway lifting bridge and Bridgewater Circle improvements in Trafford.

£60m rail freight terminal will also be built, facilitating the incoming cargo traffic, which will be connected to Chat Moss Line onto the West Coast Main Line.

It is projected that the Salford terminal will commence its operations as soon as 2023, providing the local economy with many opportunities, making a great bid towards leveling up the country.
